Unexplained …

I repost this post often as it touches me deeply.

My daughter Deb is a twin. Sadly her sister Susan was only here for a few hours.

One of my favorite pictures of Debbie (age 3)

Katy (Katama) was Deb’s first Boykin Spaniel. She was the first dog to go on vacation with Deb and me, no big surprise that it was to MV. Katy left us after 20 months and we feel that she’s now with Susan. Here’s Deb with Katy at Sengekontacket Pond on Martha’s Vineyard.

Chappy (Chappaquiddick) was Deb’s next Boykin Spaniel. Here they are enjoying the window seat at the inn we were staying at in Oak Bluffs.

We took lots of pictures of Chappy’s first trip to the Vineyard, especially on the beach and in the water. He really enjoyed splashing about and barking at waves. These pictures show a little of his fun at the beach.

Is this a double exposure, or is it Deb and Chappy with Susan and Katy ? You be the judge.  Just let me say that my camera, not a digital one, had never, until that day, taken a double exposure and never did so afterwards.

Happy Halloween !!!

Looking Back At April 2009 (Dog Sitting)…

April 2009…A friend of my daughter Deb’s asked us if we’d like to dog sit for their two Labs, Silas and Balou.  So Deb, her dog Chappy and I set out for MV .No matter how many times I go to the Vineyard my heart skips a beat or two when I see the above sign and the rotary welcoming you to Cape Cod. This was our first time sailing on the then new ferry, Island Home. Seven miles and 45 minutes later we touched tire in Vineyard Haven. We were about to start an Island adventure like none before.

100_8616 (2) Here is Deb surrounded by a happy, friendly threesome. Chappy on the left, Balou in the front and Silas being petted. We have never met nicer dogs, they are well behaved, sweet, gentle and loving, patient and fun. There wasn’t one moment that we didn’t enjoy being with them. Oh, okay, maybe when Balou was trying so hard to tell us things and we just were too slow on the uptake… but generally speaking (or woofing) things went very, very well.

100_8636 Except for the weather. Two of the days we were there were wet… very, very wet. And when they said soaking rain they meant it.

100_8646 (2) This picture was taken from inside our dry car looking out at Edgartown Harbor. Wet, wet, wet. It was windy too. And wet.

But there were times of no rain and actuall brilliant sunshine and so off on our walks in the woods we would venture. The 4 leggeds were happy to be out and about sniffing, walking, and being together.

In all too short a time our dog sitting adventure came to an end and it was time to head home.

Chappy is waiting to say goodbye to his new friends. He had a great time with Silas and Balou.

The Island Home is waiting for us and all too soon we are setting tire in Woods Hole and back to reality.

This of course is my take on our dog sitting adventure but Chappy himself made a guest appearance on the blog and really, you should read his… CLICK HERE

Here’s a little bit of what Chappy eloquently had to say:

*’a friend of my mom’s invited us to dog sit… I didn’t actually notice anyone sitting like a dog (except my dog friends) but humans have weird jargon sometimes. I just go with the flow and don’t ask questions.

And….

Oak Bluffs is another of our favorite towns to walk around in.  If you look really really close you can see mom and me standing outside the movie theatre on the corner.  She’s taking photos and I’m trying to keep one eye on her and one eye on gram who wandered off to the other side of the information booth.  Man, keeping them together would be so much easier if they were both leashed.

Remembering Dog Sitting On MV…

Thinking about Chappy and how he liked to pop over to my blog to post from time to time. This was from our dog sitting adventure on MV in April 2009. Miss him.

MV Obsession

Hi, it’s me Chappy, the granddog.  I was here last year to guest post about my MV visit… click HERE to read that post.

Since I just did a fun post on my mom’s blogChappysmom I thought I’d bounce over here and help gram with one about MY adventure on MV a few weeks ago.

This was the first time staying in an actual house and it was so great.  Julie, a friend of my mom’s invited us to dog sit… I didn’t actually notice anyone sitting like a dog (except my dog friends) but humans have weird jargon sometimes.  I just go with the flow and don’t ask questions.

My new dog friends, Silas and Balou were great hosts and I really enjoyed having dog friends to hang out with.  One of the best parts about hanging out with them were our walks in the woods.

Beloved Chappy …

How do I even begin to write this post about our beloved granddog Chappy.  What can you say about a dog that has been part of your life for nearly 15 years and gave you nothing but love, enjoyment and devotion.  He was wonderful, pure and simple just a dear sweet soul of a dog.

I was with my daughter Deb, the day she picked him up.   He was a little ball of fuzz, not sleek and curly like some of his liter mates but he was charming and cute and determined to come home with us.  Here he is with his liter mates… and saying goodbye to his parents Buddy & Tawny…

There’s so much I want to say about Chappy and so many, many hundreds of pictures of him I’d like to share but I could never fit it all into one post, or even ten for that matter.

A Shearing …

In April 2008 my daughter Deb, her dog Chappy, and I went to a shearing on Martha’s Vineyard, our first shearing ever.  The weather was gorgeous… low 70’s, bright sunshine, soft breezes, good food, good friends… it was great.

The sheep and goats and the older kids (goats, not humans) were already out and about when we got there a little before 10 am.  You’ll notice in the bottom picture the adults have closed ranks around one of the young kids and are all focusing their attention in one direction…

They are staring at Chappy, our Boykin Spaniel who to them is a predator.  Chappy on the other hand is looking at them increduously and wondering, what the heck are these animals?

Whenever Deb and Chappy moved to another spot the sheep would move and face them… it was really interesting,

I’d never seen shearing  before and it’s very interesting.  The sheep and goats look almost in a Zen state while they’re being sheared and having their hooves clipped.  The wool is mostly in one piece when the shearing is finished, it’s amazing. The wool is so soft you can hardly feel it,  it’s also still a little warm to the touch.

In the beginning of my post I said the ‘older kids’ were here at the shearing… the ‘little kids’ were not.   The following day however we got to meet them up close and personal at the farm.

Cuteness overload.

The moms kept an eye on us, especially on Chappy, but they let the kids come and sniff at us and let us pet and snuzzle them.

It was a great weekend for all of us.

Chappy Goes To The Store …

One of Chappy’s favorite places in town.

100_1860

Heading right to the bins of biscuits – pizza flavor is one of his favs. His tail is wagging so fast that he’s a blur of fur.

100_1850

The lady who works there remembers him and offers him a treat.

But first he has to do some tricks to earn it…

‘down’

‘shake’

It’s Chappy …

Hi, it’s Chappy.  I haven’t visited gram’s blog in awhile and since today is my 11th birthday she invited me to write a post.   Here goes.

This is where it all began… me with my brothers and one sister all smooshed up against our dog mom Tawny.

100_1760

This is mom and dad… Tawny and Buddy.  I’ve been told I look more like my mom and have her sweet disposition…but I’ve got some of dad’s sense of fun in me too.

100_1762

This is my mom, Deb.  Oops, I’m skipping ahead here, I wanted to tell you about our first day together.  Well , not all of it, some of it was traumatic but that’s for another post someday.

101_4783100_0759

After I said goodbye to Tawny and Buddy we began our long trek across Pennsylvania to New Jersey.  You can see I was already in the driver’s seat.

100_1763

I caused quite a ruckus when we stopped at McDonald’s for lunch.  I had no idea I was so cute and I certainly had no idea what wonderful smells and tastes were out in the world.  Talk about excitement, I actually stayed awake for awhile.

100_1768

Finally after days on the road, well it seemed like days to me, what did I know about cars and roads and big noisy trucks that kept waking me up.  Mom says it was more like 6 hours… in puppy time that IS days.   Good thing I was so rested ’cause when we got home look at all the toys waiting for me… I couldn’t believe it.  The six of us siblings had one toy and one tennis ball to play with, I was in toy heaven.100_1766100_1764
Just look at me… sweet, adorable, just a hint of mischief in my eyes.  Yup, I picked the absolute  best mom and family in the world. But enough of the mushy stuff.

100_1765

The pictures below weren’t my idea…  gram snuck them on here when I wasn’t looking.  Really, I have no idea how they got here but go ahead and enjoy them… I like the ones of me with mom the best.  Okay, bye for now, Chappy signing off 🙂

Vacationing With Pets …

Here’s a guest post by my granddog Chappy ourBoykin Spaniel, to tell you about MV with  pets.   Take it away Chappy.

Hi, this is me in the car going to Martha’s Vineyard.  I know I look all relaxed and eager to get there but in reality I’m a nervous mess.  I don’t like car rides, especially the 1000 hours it takes to get there from NJ.  OK, maybe not 1000, more like 6 but in dog hours it could be 1000.

I’ve stayed at two places on Martha’s Vineyard.

Bradys NESW in Oak Bluffs is one.  Our room had a huge window with a window seat.  Mom and Gram are nutsy over window seats for some reason but I got dibs on it first.  I have to say it was pretty darn nice… sunshine, fluffy pillows, the only thing lacking were biscuits.    Brady’s NESW is really nice, Brady is a friendly guy who knows a lot about the Vineyard and enjoys sharing his knowledge and helpful hints with his guests.  His dog Amie was the first one to greet us and was eager to show us our room…she even stayed to make sure we got settled in nicely.  She and I got along great, I even shared a biscuit with her.

The Island Inn also in Oak Bluffs is the other.

Once we arrive at the Island Inn I can stretch my legs, have a bite to eat and get settled in.

See, this is me very, very settled in… in fact I’m so settled I’m almost asleep.

The Island Inn is a great place to stay with your people… the rooms vary in sizes from 1 or 2 bedrooms to townhouse suites,  they also have a 2 bedroom cottage.  All the accommodations have kitchenettes in them… I love that, I think it’s very important to always have food nearby.   The people there have their own dogs who help us 4 legged guests check in.  Everyone is super friendly and nice.

I have to say that at first I thought the dogs and kids were a little aloof and then my mom explained to me that this is something called a sculpture.  Wow, what a relief that was, I mean there wasn’t any scent I could pick up and it freaked me out.

I love walking around on the Vineyard, the scenery is so pretty… like here in Edgartown near the lighthouse.  Even though I can’t see all the colors I’m still amazed at the beauty of Martha’s Vineyard.

And the shopping… the Vineyard is so dog friendly that I’m allowed just about everywhere.  There are lots of good stores for dogs… I think my favorite one is Good Dog Goods in Oak Bluffs.   The owner Kerry Scott and all her people who work there are so nice.  They get right down on the floor and play with me,  and offer me treats… I like that in a person.  We always bring bags of treats home to NJ … I like that too.  And I like this sticker.

The Black Dog is another good place to go … they have a great selection of biscuits and leashes etc… oh and their BD tee shirts are especially popular with people.

So let’s see… I’ve mentioned where we like to stay… and where I like to shop… and how dog friendly MV is… all that’s left is for you to experience MV yourself.  Here’s more MV pet information.

This is me on the way home… I am so totally and happily exhaustatated that I’m actually sleeping.

Chappy Visits MV …

Hi, I’m Chappy and I just popped over to gram’s blog from my mom’s blog, www.chappysmom.com to tell you about my wonderful trip to MV in April. Actually, I posted here in January about pets on MV, it was so much fun that I’m back to guest post again.

Bradys in Oak Bluffs is where we stayed.

This is Amie, she is Brady’s dog and the official greeter for us four-legged guests.  She showed us right to our room and clued me in on the good things to sniff and check out.  She’s really nice.

Our room had a window seat, I wasn’t sure what that was although I’ve heard mom say time and time again that she’d love to have one.  Now I know why, they’re wonderful.. I mean really, a big window to look out of and the sun pouring in to bask in… what more (except food) could a guy ask for.  Once in awhile I actually shared it with mom… see how happy she looks… I do too.

The first morning we were there we went for a walk after breakfast.  The beach and the water look so pretty but it was too cold to dip my paws in the water.  I met another dog friend, she had only been with her adopted mom a few days and was getting used to her new home… she was nice.

Then we went to the MV Fiber Farm festival.  I had never seen sheep and goats before and I just didn’t know what to make of them.  They sure didn’t smell like any animals I ever met before.  I was perplexed and they seemed to be too.  “Hey, you lookin at me!”  Yup, they sure were, they kept a close eye on mom and me, wherever we moved to they followed us… it was like a game after awhile.

I got to meet two more dogs… Fritz, a sheltie and also a brown spaniel.

It was fun getting to know them and we played each time we saw each other.

This is mom and me relaxing a little bit.  She’s of course knitting and I’m fighting to keep my eyes open.  I lost..teehee.  It was a really, really full and fun day.   But the fun wasn’t over because the next day..

… we went to see the baby goats that weren’t at the festival.

Look at me !  I’m sniffing a goats behind !!  I can’t believe it either.

They’re so cute and smaller then I am, but not for long.  They were so friendly, they came right up to us and they let mom and gram pet them…

… mom even KISSED one !

This is mom and me sitting in the Campground while gram takes a few pictures.  We were all happily tired.

We did manage to visit a few new people while we were on MV and of course we ate some good food too.  I love eating in mom’s car which we call Cafe Volvo. I always get some of what mom and gram are eating and that makes me very happy especially when they have chicken… or donuts… or hamburgers… or anything.

Thank you gram for letting me visit your blog… this is Chappy signing off.
