MV Obsession

My obsession with Martha's Vineyard.. phototography..genealogy and life in general and this and that…

About

I am a Vineyard-a-holic.   My mother was raised there and began bringing me to Martha’s Vineyard when I was less than a year old.

I love to be there and when I’m not there I think about being there.

This blog began in 2007 and was strictly about my love of Martha’s Vineyard.  I wrote about news and happenings on the Vineyard, I included personal stories, and from time to time threw in a little Vineyard history.

Little by little though I branched out and wrote about other things and also posted more photographs.  I’m still just as obsessed with the Vineyard but like to include other things from time to time.

I live in NJ with my family and try to get to the Vineyard as often as I can.

I’m interested in genealogy and in researching my ancestors have found out that on my mother’s side we go back to the Pilgrims who came to America on the first voyage of the Mayflower.  On my father’s side I found that I’m related to one of the founders of Newark, New Jersey which is where I was born.  I love that my roots go so deep into American history.

Any questions about MV are welcome.

Enjoy 🙂

  1. I am taking my family to MV the week of the 4th this year, I spent a summer on Chappy as a nanny back in 99. I am also from NJ. I decided to take them to MV in stead of Nantucket because I can’t yet bring myself to go back to Nantucket yet. I grew up going there in the summers, my grandfather built a small house there and it was lost due to bad will preparation. I will hopefully bring the kids there when they are older, the house is still there at the end of our old property. Anyway thank you for your great blog, I love MV and Nantucket and I am hoping my kids and husband see all the beauty and not just the money. I’m an artist, visual , I am looking forward to the beaches, hoping its not way to crowded. best, Lucy

  2. I just discovered your blog. Like you, I live in the NJ and have been spending vacations on the Vineyard for 12 years now. I’ll be there in 5 weeks! Listening to WMVY on the web as I type this!! Keep up the good work!!

  3. That’s for stopping by my blog, I like your page…. Martha’s Vineyard is on our ‘list’ to see!

  4. I LOVE the Vineyard. In fact, I love it so much I designed a topography map of the entire island. Check out my website at gloriamylyk.org. Please take a look at it and if you like it you may want to show it on your website. Just remember it is copyrighted. I would love to share the map with other Vineyard lovers. My intent is to highlight the natural areas of the island so that at a glance you can see elevation and conservation areas. I also thought that by seeing the ocean depths clearly, you can imagine how it relates to flooded or lowland areas of the Vineyard.

    Enjoy!

  5. I would be ever so happy if you could post something about our Martha’s Vineyard KIDS FIRST! Film Critics Boot Camp on your blog.
This camp is a one week day camp held at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center in Vineyard Haven August 11-15. It is for boys and girls, ages 10-15 who love film, love to talk about film and love to be on camera.
And, please let your readers know that there are a limited number of scholarships available. They should contact the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society for more information about how to apply. (508) 696-9369
I see you have four kids, ages 8-16. Perhaps one of them would be interested in coming to our camp. Let me know. We are hoping to fill these scholarships soon.
The camp is sponsored by the 23-year-old nonprofit children’s media advocacy organization, Coalition for Quality Children’s Media.
Our promotional budget is very limited and we would be thrilled if you would feel good about posting this information on your site.
Here’s a link to our landing page about the camp.http://www.kidsfirst.org/become-a-juror/2014.BootCamp.html
    Thank you in advance.
I have some darling photos of the kids on assignment.

  6. I was interested to find this blog of yours, I’ve always had a soft spot for Martha’s Vineyard even though I’ve never even been to the States. When I was studying Deaf Culture I learned that years ago there were so many deaf families living in the area that the place was virtually bilingual, there were no probelms with communication and no discrimination against signers. I haven’t found any mention of that yet on your blog but maybe it’s in a post I haven’t found yet. I’ve enjoyed your great photos.

  7. You’re welcome. 🙂

  8. Oh, I already see the similarities between us! haha. When a place captures your heart, there is no turning back. 🙂

  9. Thank you for following my blog!!

  10. Hello! I am working on an article for UntappedNewYork.com on the history of the M/V Islander! Would you be interested in letting us use some of your photos of the ferry? If so please reach out to me at nicole (at) untappedcities.com Thank you!

  11. Hello, I’ve just discovered your Blog in an effort of finding a song that’s been unknown for years now. It’s lyrics are 100% connected to Martha’s Vineyard and Illumination Night. Since you seem very experienced with the Vineyard, I’m asking you if you could have a listen to the song and tell me If you’ve heard it somewhere before. Here’s the YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8I6rsyIKCUI&ab_channel=SimonHill

    Thank you in advance!

    • Hi Alex and thank you for the link to the song, which I’ve never heard but liked it a lot. I am asking my MV music friends if any of them have heard it and will let you know what they say. Thank you for visiting my blog 🙂

  12. Hello – I am trying to find a copy of one of the MV cross stitch patterns, Its the one with the three rows of sights from the Vineyard with the 3/4 grape vine frame. I have lost mine since I completed the cross stitch and would like to recreate it as a gift. Do you still have it and the color chart? If so would you be willing to make a copy and either email or mail one to me. Thank you in advance,

  13. Unfortunately I don’t have my charts anymore.
