The Christmas Box …

T’was Christmas morning and all through the house,

Everyone was stirring, even the mouse,

Lots of smiles, joy and merriment,

And of course a new ornament.

Patty opened her box and Deb’s turn was next,

The look on her face was very perplexed !

The box was empty, no ornament inside…

I felt terrible and almost cried.

Deb rose to her feet and headed to the tree,

And hung the empty box where the ornament should be.

The following year I searched all around,

A perfect ornament for Deb must be found,

It was, it was just meant to be,

A box ornament for our Christmas tree.

We hang them each year and remember with glee,

How an empty box (filled with love) came to decorate our tree.

I'm married, I have two daughters and two grandchildren and they all love MV. Enjoy my MV blog and contact me if I can answer any questions. This blog started out as strictly about Martha's Vineyard but over the years I've branched out to include other obsessions and interests. I enjoy photography and like sharing my photos here as well. Hope you enjoy :)

  1. Big smile! šŸ™‚ You are so clever, Mom!

  2. Very cute, Mom! You forgot to mention that, the following year, when you had the cute box ornament to give me, you completely forgot about it when you brought the presents downstairs. It wasn’t until after all the presents were open that you remembered and went rushing upstairs to try to find it.

  3. I love your poem, Joan!

We have an empty, but pretty box or two, around our house, as well. My grandchildren ask about the small box residing on our kitchen window sill during this season. In this case the box once held a gift from a dear friend from years ago, but since I loved the beautiful box and it’s ribbon, I have kept it. It reminds me of this dear friend.
