January is not too early to start planning an MV vacation, especially if you want to go in the summer. Hotels and rental properties get snapped up early so it’s wise to start looking for what you want now. My entry of Oct 9, 2007 pretty much gives all the information for getting to MV that is needed.
I myself travel by car from NJ to Woods Hole… a trip of about 5 and 1/2 to 6 hours depending on traffic and how many stops are needed. If I’m traveling by myself I rarely stop as I’m too anxious to get there and perhaps get an earlier ferry. By the way, me getting an earlier ferry has become an ongoing joke in our family.
The Steamship Authority is the only ferry that carries cars and of course passengers. The ferries to MV leave from Woods Hole, it’s 7 miles and a mere 45 minutes to Martha’s Vineyard. If you’re taking your car then reservations are a MUST especially in the summer months. As a passenger without a car reservations are not needed. The Steamship Authority website will show you right away if the times and dates you want are available.
Since I’m always thinking about MV I like to have my reservations in my hands as soon as possible. I like that Steamship Authority envelope sitting on my desk holding my passage to Vineyard… it’s comforting knowing I will be there again.
